It is fun and rewarding to learn how to create your own perfume. You get to express your individuality through smell. It also gives you control of what goes into your fragrance.

So many people are now making their own perfumes to avoid synthetic ingredients. You can mix natural oils according to your taste. Whether you’re cooking it for yourself or giving it as a present, it’s simple to begin.

All you need are some tools, essential oils and a little creativity. Before you look for custom fragrances, here’s how to create your signature scent.

Know The Notes In Your Fragrance

Fragrances consist of three layers: top notes, middle notes, and base notes. Each has its own special role. Top notes are the first thing you smell. They’re delicate and clean but evaporate fast.

Typical top notes include lemon, lavender or mint. Middle notes follow. These are sometimes referred to as heart notes. They have longer wear and determine the core scent.

Rose, jasmine or cinnamon are a few examples. Base notes come in last. They are deep, warm, and long wearing. Some examples are sandalwood, vanilla and musk.

All three are needed to construct a balanced perfume. A common ratio would be 30%–top, 50%–middle, and 20%–base notes. You can modify this according to your needs.

Before mixing, take time to smell different oils. Just balance heavy notes with lighter notes. Create harmony, not conflict. Write down your choices. Then, you’ll be able to recreate or enhance your blend down the line.

Use The Right Essential Oils

Now it’s time to choose your essential oils. Make sure to use high-quality, pure oils. Cheap or diluted oils won’t provide a deep scent. They also can cause irritation.

First decide on the vibe you want. Do you prefer your perfume floral or woody, fresh, or spicy? Every category consists of its own oils. For floral, opt for rose, ylang-ylang or geranium.

For something woodier, cedarwood, patchouli or vetiver. Buy oils from trusted brands. Look at the label — does it say it’s 100% pure essential oil? Steer clear of products with added fragrance or alcohol.

You can purchase sample sizes to try before you buy full bottles, too. Use dark bottles for your oils. They can be damaged by light over time.

Blend Your Signature Scent

Now comes the fun part — blending. For your test blend you will need a small glass dropper bottle. First, just start with adding the base note. Add about 5 to 6 drops.

Then you are onto the middle note. Add around 10 to 12 drops. Finish with the top note. Use 3 to 4 drops. Swirl the bottle gently. Do not shake it. Allow the oil to sit for a couple minutes.

Next, smell the blend. If one note is too dominant you can balance it out. If desired, add additional of the lighter smelling scent. You might have to try a few times before you get it right.

Experiment with different blends for different moods or events. Make it a fun and creative process. Your nose will guide you with custom California fragrance.

Pick The Perfect Carrier

Essential oils are strong. You must dilute them over a career. Meaning the perfume is safe to use on the skin. It also prolongs the scent of life. It shuns a few great ones on carriers. Jojoba oil is my favorite.

It is lightweight and compact, and with a long shelf life. Fractionated coconut oil is also a good option. It’s odorless and mixes nicely. Sweet almond oil also helps, though it, too, may not keep as well.

Use a clean glass bottle with a dropper or roller top. Add your carrier oil first. Fill it about 75% of the way. Next, pour in your blended essential oils. Shake gently to combine.

Allow the mixture to sit for 48 hours. This helps the scent settle. Some age it 4 weeks or so. The more time it must sit, the richer it becomes. Keep the bottle out of heat and light. Apply it as a roll-on or a light touch on your pulse points.

Conclusion

Creating your own bespoke fragrance is easy, creative and satisfying. You learn how smells interact with each other. You also have complete control over what hits your skin.

Each part, from picking oils to bottling your blend, is a labor of happiness. You can express your mood, style, and taste in each drop.

Plus, it is a great way to steer clear of the harsh chemicals in many store perfumes. With a small amount of work, you can wear a scent that is so much you. So, pick an oil and blend it now!
